Die Orientierungsstufe umfaßt die Klassenstufen 5 und 6 und bildet eine pädagogische Einheit. In ihr geht es darum, die Kinder langsam, aber zielgerichtet an die Arbeit im Gymnasium heranzuführen.

Der Unterricht in der Mittelstufe dient dem grundlegenden Ziel des Gymnasiums – dem Erwerb einer breiten und vertieften Allgemeinbildung. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler werden so auf einen erfolgreichen Besuch der gymnasialen Oberstufe vorbereitet. Auch die Berufsorientierung ist ein fester Bestandteil der Mittelstufe, die die Klassen 7 bis 10 umfasst.

In Rheinland-Pfalz ist die gymasiale Oberstufe in der Form der Mainzer Studienstufe (MSS) organisiert. Sie hat das Ziel, die Schülerinnen und Schüler zum Abitur zu führen.
